Bordeaux 2009 - The Wines
"I have never given so many really high scores when tasting en primeur anywhere. The wines were, in general, a huge pleasure to taste" Jancis Robinson MW. www.jancisrobinson.com
"A lot of people make comparisons to 1982, which I have to agree with to some extent but, honestly, I think they are better." James Suckling, Wine Spectator
Bordeaux 2009 is an extremely exciting vintage, it has produced some extraordinary wines. The quality of the top chateaux is breathtaking and many others have made their best ever wine. Generally speaking, Bordeaux's left bank has outperformed the right where some wines have struggled with the high alcohol levels that resulted from the very ripe grapes. Whilst not all Bordeaux 2009s have been created equal there will be more than enough amazing wine to go around.
Bordeaux 2009 Vintage Report
When Bordeaux 2009 is good, it is very, very good. The vintage's sweet spot is the Medoc: St Estephe, St Julien, Pauillac, and (to a slightly lesser extent) Margaux. The classified growths for these communes have almost uniformly excelled.

What is En Primeur?
En Primeur is a kind of wine futures, where wines are offered for sale before they have been bottled. The wine producers (chateaux) show cask samples of the young wine after just a few months development in barrel, and then prices are set and an offer made. Originally this was a way for wine brokers or negociants to buy the young wines direct from the Chateaux, which they would only bottle and sell on when the wine was ready to drink. Nowadays, such is the demand for them, that the wines are offered for sale to the customer in this state.
Why buy En Primeur?
Buying 'En Primeur' is probably the only way to secure a sought after wine at a reasonable price. Demand for the best wines from these regions has grown hugely in the last few years, and will often easily outstrip supply. For this reason, some wines will not be available commercially later in their lives, and if they are, will command much higher prices.
