Tasting Notes

"Sweet and juicy, impossible to dislike. Slightly dry end." Jancis Robinson MW

'A smoky, spicy Kiwi Pinot with creamy raspberry and blackberry fruit and juicy, ripe tannins. Perfect with roast lamb or venison.' Bibendum

Vinification Details.

The grapes were picked on the 5th and 11th April, with the top and bottom blocks picked and fermented separately. Ferments lasted for around the 20 days, with a peak temperature of 34?C. All the ferments took place in stainless steel. The wine was aged in barrel for 11 months (30% new) with inoculated malolactic in the spring. The wine was fined with egg white and only very lightly filtered before bottling.

Producer Information

This winery in Central Otago offers top-class Pinot Noir from our very own Kiwi Matt Douglas. Matt may only have 3ha of Pinot planted around his Bannockburn house but this is fine quality rather than quantity.

Regional info.

Central Otago is the most Southerly wine region in the world, and probably the coolest in the New World. This cool, maritime climate is perfect for grapes such as Rielsing and Pinot Noir, both of which wilt in excessive heat. A relatively young wine region, quality is nevertheless very high and the Pinot Noirs in particular are developing a reputation as being among the best in the world.
